Extreme Cold
Very cold air combined with strong winds can create dangerously high Wind Chill values, and index that measures the combined cooling of temperature and wind on the body. The National Weather Service will issue a Wind Chill Advisory when high winds that cause a dangerous Wind Chill are expected. A Wind Chill Watch will be posted when extremely cold temperatures and strong winds are possible, and a Wind Chill Warning will be issued when dangerous Wind Chill values are likely. Intense Wind Chills can cause life-threatening diseases such as frostbite and hypothermia that in a matter of minutes. The best ways protect yourself against dangers from the cold are by dressing in layers, covering up exposed skin, keeping your core body temperature warm, and most importantly limiting your time outdoors when the Wind Chill is below -20F.
